The green-skin truth

If You've Bought Gold Jewellery That Turned Your Skin Green, Here's The Truth No Jewellery Brand Will Tell You

7 things to know before you buy another piece (and why it was never your skin's fault)

The short versionGreen skin comes from cheap metal under a thin gold coat, not from you. Sweat, salt water and lotion wear that coat down, and the copper underneath reacts with your skin. Before you buy again, look for 316L stainless steel, 18K gold plating, a hypoallergenic, nickel-free base and a lifetime warranty. That's what we make in Miami.
The real cause
01

It Was Never Your Skin

Green mark on a finger next to a worn cheap ringNot your skin

If a ring ever left a green band on your finger, you probably blamed yourself. Too much sweat. The wrong lotion. "Sensitive skin."

Here's what's really going on. A lot of cheap jewellery has copper in the metal underneath. When the salts and acids in your sweat reach that copper, they react and leave green copper salts on your skin. That's chemistry, not a flaw in you.

Your skin didn't fail the jewellery. The jewellery failed your skin.

Most "Gold" Is A Thin Coat Over Cheap Metal

Close-up of a gold-tone chain where the coating has worn offThin coat. Cheap core.

Plenty of jewellery sold as gold is a thin layer of gold color over a cheap base metal. It looks beautiful on day one.

Then real life starts. Your shower, your hand lotion, your sunscreen, the pool. Little by little the coating wears through, the shine goes patchy and the metal underneath touches your skin. That's usually when the green shows up.

It didn't stop being pretty. It stopped being gold.

What to check
03

There Are Two Kinds Of Stainless Steel

A dull bracelet next to four shiny gold bracelets on a wet pool towel304 vs 316L

Even when a brand says "stainless steel," the grade matters.

304 is the cheaper, everyday grade. Honestly, it isn't bad, but salt water and chlorine get to it. 316L is the more expensive grade, known for its strength and its resistance to corrosion and scratches. If a label just says "stainless steel" and never names the grade, that tells you something too.

Before you buy another piece, look for one number: 316L.

Miami Is A Hard Test For Jewellery

Woman at a cafe on Ocean Drive wearing four gold braceletsSalt. Sun. Sweat.

We started Sofia Hartley in Miami, where the day begins with coffee on a sunny balcony and ends with dinner on Ocean Drive. Humidity, salt air, sunscreen, the ocean, the pool.

For years most of what we owned couldn't keep up. Chains lost their color in the humidity. Rings left green marks. So we went looking for pieces that could, and when we couldn't find them, we made them ourselves.

Jewellery that fits the way you actually live.

Jewellery You Have To Take Off Is Jewellery You Stop Wearing

A drawer full of dull gold-tone jewelleryThe drawer

Think about the pieces in your drawer right now. The bracelet from that vacation. The necklace from someone who matters.

You didn't stop loving them. You started taking them off. For the shower, for the pool, for the gym. And the moment you start taking something off, it ends up in a drawer, because you can't bear to throw it away.

You were always a jewellery person. You were just buying jewellery you had to take off.

Every Brand Says Tarnish-Free. Ask Who Puts It In Writing For Life

Wrist with four gold bracelets under an outdoor showerRinse. That's it.

"Tarnish-free" is the easiest thing in the world to print on a product page. The real question is what a brand promises when you wear it every single day, through salt water, chlorine and sweat.

So ask for the warranty, and ask how long it lasts. Every Sofia Hartley piece comes with a lifetime warranty. Care takes ten seconds: rinse with fresh water after the pool or the ocean, and skip polishing cloths and cleaners made for sterling silver.

A brand that stands behind it for life is telling you the truth.
